January & February 2015

January 2015 and another year ahead for my fishing exploits. We have been lucky with the weather, not had any snow to cause any problems. It's been cold but I have only been frozen off once. It's been another windy January, similar to last year but I have been out on the bank.I've had some good days out and managed to bag a winter carp.

This year I've been concentrating my efforts on the silver fish and fished a few club matches.Over the christmas period I had a look at how I was punch fishing and not doing too well.To be honest I have not been shown how to fish breadpunch and only read a few articles on the internet I was doing something way wrong with my catch results and decided to put things right.

I went back to the internet and looked for a dvd on how to fish breadpunch, I came across Will Raison's DVD "Silvers on the Pole part 3 Canal roach on breadpunch".Since I've watched this dvd a good few times I've caught very well and even managed to win my lake in a club match with 3lbs 15oz of roach & skimmers on punch.

The dvd is very imformative and a must for anyone wanting to learn how to fish breadpunch. I was doing a lot of things wrong but now I know the secrets and have had some good days punch fishing. Will shows you how to prepare the breadpunch and talks you through his positive rig set ups and how to feed.He then has a session on the Kennet & Avon Canal where he put's the theory into practise.

The picture to the right shows the type of float's I've been using, fine lines and small hooks along with my second brown envelope of the season, I was third in another club match at the beginning of January. All the rigs are very positive and upto now and working well.I do enjoy the club matches and hoping to frame again in the months ahead.

Upto now I've had a good start to the New Year especially the bonus carp of about 6 to 7lbs.This gave my size 8 elastic a good work out but by taking my time I managed to land the fish.My mate Dave is waiting till it warms up considerably before he ventures out.I'm going to try several new waters this year and write articles about them. There's loads to choose from in the North West of England.

February has also been cold & windy but I have still been able to get out on the bank targeting the silverfish. On one venue I managed to catch 100 fish on a mixture of punch to start and maggot later in the day. I've even framed again in a club match fishing punch so I must have learned something from the Will Raison DVD.I came third on my lake and it was the coldest day so far with strong winds & snow blowing in my face for the 4 hour match.

I always have my camera with me while on the bank and more times that not a local robin always turns up for a few freebies. This year I had a surprise when I looked over my shoulder and saw the head of a cock pheasant appear over a grass bank, needless to say he had a good meal from me with a few handfull of maggots thrown his way.

I'm now looking forward to March and going to try and develop my skills using groundbait & casters for the matches I fish.Hopefully the weather will begin to warm up.
