Highfield Fisheries April 2016

My Latest venture out was to Highfield fishery near Hambleton.I was trying the fishery out after visiting the fishery website during the week. I fancied a change of scenery having fished most of the year on my club waters. There are three pools on site but at the weekends some are booked up for matches.I paid my peg fee at the hut and made my way over to peg sixteen on Ash Pool.

Weather was bright and sunny with 15 degrees on the thermometer, it was also calm to start but the wind got up in the afternoon and made fishing at distance quite difficult.Peg sixteen faces an island but is out of reach of the pole, it looks a good peg for feeder fishing.

I set up two swims one at 10 o'clock and one at 2 o'clock.Rig set up was a AS.5G float with 3lb mainline to a 12 inch 2lb hooklength and a size 20 kamasan B611 hook.A bulk set at 18 inch from the hook with two droppers on the hooklength.Depth of swim was 5 feet at around 10 metres.Shallow set up was a drennan .2g caster float with a size 20 Kamasan B611 hook on 3lb mainline and a 6inch 2lb hooklength, strung out shotting pattern.

Having not fished here before my tactics would be to target the silver fish, I put in a small ball of groundbait with micros & maggots and left the swim for half an hour.I started up in the water on maggot in the two o'clock swim and began to catch small roach and skimmers.I went onto my deck swim and caught several roach, skimmers and small crucian cross carp on maggot.

The wind got up and I ended up fishing towards the next peg in the margins, this brought some good sized roach, a few perch & skimmers along with a bonus barbel of 3 to 4 pounds. With hindsight I should have fished longer in the margins.

This fishery is very scenic and I will be making the journey again to fish the Oak Pool and another bacon & egg barm.

Day ticket was £8 with toilets and a cafe on site also
