Heskin Old Hall Pool One January 2018

My first venture out for 2018 was to be Heskin Old Hall Fishery near Wrightington, it's a place were you should always get a few bites. We have been lucky once again with the weather,it's been cold and Icy but nothing like we have had in the past.It was 5 degrees today with a very cold wind, I opted for pool one as there are a few trees around it that would offer some protection.

I chose a peg on the opposite side of the lake as you go through the gate, it had a bush to my right that would hopefully keep the wind off me, I set up two swims, one at 10 o'clock and one at 12 .Tactics were maggot on the bottom with minimal feeding to start.Float was my trusty drennan .5g roach float with .125mm mainline to a size 20 kamasan B611 hook.

I put a few maggots in my pole cup and fed the 12 o'clock line, I was leaving this swim alone for about half an hour, on the 10 o'clock swim I drip fed a few maggots and lowered the rig in, it took a while before i got my first fish which was a small perch. The wind was up so I fished about 4 inches overdepth, bites were very slow in coming but I knew I had to be patient.

I began to catch a few small roach, after a while it was time to try the 12 o'clock line to see if any fish were in the peg, after several minutes I had my first decent fish, a winter skimmer, more were to follow .

I kept trickling in a few maggots to keep the fish interested , I was getting indications that the fish had come up in the water so changed to a shallow rig and once again began to catch some fish at about 3 foot 2 inches deep.Careful feeding kept the fish coming.

My first session of 2018 was really good and hopefully many more will follow
